New editor for articles 2 Years, 6 Months ago
For those of you who have editing privileges for the web site content, I've changed the default editor to one which I believe is easier to use and allows for uploading photos to go with your articles.

I am (hopefully) attaching to this note a copy of the basic editing doc that I created for you.

Re:New editor for articles 2 Years, 6 Months ago
Unfortunately, when I try to create an article, I get the older editor (at least it looks like it), and I can't even enter anything into either text box now.

Re:New editor for articles 2 Years, 6 Months ago
When I go in to edit an existing article (in my case, the SFO news item), I see the title area, three tabs (editing, publishing, metadata), and the two input boxes (introtext and fulltext). However, the actual text that is already in the news item is nowhere to be seen. Nor do I see any of the other stuff (icons for all the editing functions.

This is true both when I go in through Safari and through Firefox (both on the Mac).

What gives, bro' Fred?

The various editors look remarkably alike, so I'm reasonably sure you have the right one, which should be the only one accessible. You should be able to verify that by whether the icons match those in the doc I sent out. But I can't imagine why you can't enter text, Dick. I wonder if this is a Chrome compatibility thing? I'll have to check it out from the house, since I can't install anything on the machine at the office -- not even a bleepity-bleep printer driver -- without calling a tech in.

Nancy, using Firefox in WinXP at home, IE with XP at the office, and Safari on the iPhone (!), I get the icons in the editor, all four tabs, and existing article content. But none of those equals Firefox or Safari on the Mac OS. I'll have to play with the variables to see whether that's the issue.

When I was doing web development fulltime, I kept all the browser/platform combinations in front of me. Since I no longer have a living Mac, I can't do that now, and with the restrictions at the office, my time with alternative PC browsers is limited. I'll have to rely on feedback from everyone.

There are NO icons in the editor I get, that's why I figure it's the old one.

That's just strange.

I don't think I've changed any individual profiles to use different editors ... but I've thought things before. I'll go look.

Masseo, I did not have an editor selected for you, so it should have gone to the system default. I've now explicitly set your editor to JCE, so let me know what you get next time you check it.

Alas, I still get the same thing: no icons, non-enterable text boxes. Argh.

Is that with both Chrome and IE?

Yes, I tried both. Same nothingness.

Good news!! Ned is having the same problem that you are. Being able to replicate it here will make it easier to fix.

I finally managed to get some decently-formatted text up.

Re:New editor for articles 2 Years, 6 Months ago
[sigh] The weirdness ain't over yet...three things:

1. My blurb shows up on the Community Servants page as well as the Fellowship Coordinator's page.
2. Pasting the full text in the "full text" box and nothing in the "intro" box results in a bare "read more" button when the page first loads. But pasting it all into the "intro" box presents the whole text, followed by a useless "read more" button at the bottom. How do I put the whole text on a page without a pesky "read more"?
3. The "edit" option is missing again!

Re:New editor for articles 2 Years, 6 Months ago
OK, forget #3 in my last message. I forgot I had to click the "read more" button to get to the "full text", even though the full text is already displayed and there shouldn't be a "read more" button (see #2).

Fred, are you doing something? Things keep changing. My text is playing hide-and-seek, and now I can't edit it no matter what I do.

Re:New editor for articles 2 Years, 6 Months ago
(1) This one is easy. The site is organized in three levels:

    Sections
      Categories
        Articles

The Fellowship Coordinator "page" is a Category blog layout, so it will hold all the articles (or intros to the articles) that you write for it, listing them with the newest on top.

This is a good reason for using the intro/"read more" on longer articles, so readers can see that you have several items of interest.

The Community Servants page is a Section blog layout. It will show the newest articles from all the Categories under it, currently including the Minister General, Chaplain (Three Knots), DFC, and FC.

If you want the Fellowship Friary article to be more like a traditional static page, I can set it up so that the menu links directly to the article.

(2) I messed with the text enough to have gotten rid of the "read more", I think. The editor will take some getting used to -- I'm not sure of all its quirks yet.

(3) Therein lies the advantage of the "read more" button. When you use it to get down to the individual article layout, you get the edit button. But you don't get it on the Section or Category blog layouts, because they can contain multiple articles. When you click the Articles Control Panel button, however, it should give you a list of your articles with a link to open and edit them. Do you have that?

Re:New editor for articles 2 Years, 6 Months ago
1) I don't like the redundancy of having the same item at different levels. I noticed a while back that Nancy's welcome article is on both the "home" page and the Community Servants section, and I thought that was weird. Maybe I'll split my article into an "intro" and a "full" text and see how that works.

2) Yes, the "read more" is gone, but apparently that also eliminates the possibility of editing the article.

3) The Control Panel has a "Your New Articles" area, but all that it lists is my original attempt, which I sent to the trash. Same thing with the "recent Changes" area. I can't get to my current article in the editor. Nowhere do I see a link to it.

Re:New editor for articles 2 Years, 6 Months ago
OK, see if this helps.

Go to the Fellowship page and look at the little icons below the title. On any article you own, there should be a fourth icon on the right side which will let you edit the article from any level.

No dice. There's no new icon, just the PDF, print and e-mail ones.

Something just occurred to me. When you were fooling around with the article, did you maybe take ownership of it?

Yup! Just gave it back to you.

And the other piece is that you may have to log off and log back in, if you find that the icon's still not there.

Re:New editor for articles 2 Years, 6 Months ago
Well, I get the edit icon now, but when I try to use it I get an error message: "The article Welcome to the Fellowship Friary! is currently being edited by another Editor, Publisher, or Administrator."

Can you release it?

Done. I didn't realize I still had the window open -- I hit "apply" rather than "save".

Re:New editor for articles 2 Years, 6 Months ago
OK, I was able to edit it using the link from the control panel. But, if I use the "edit" button at the bottom of the article page, I get blank input boxes as for the "create" option; not even the title shows up.

BTW, it's interesting that using the edit icon at the top runs the editor inline. Is that the expected behavior?

Re:New editor for articles 2 Years, 6 Months ago
I notice that when I open an existing article to edit it, it sometimes takes a few seconds for the text input boxes to populate.

I don't yet know how to cause the edit button to run the editor outside of the template ... and that behavior makes it difficult to use, I think. One more thing to dig into.

Re:New editor for articles 2 Years, 6 Months ago
When an article listed in my article control panel has a line through it, does that mean you've stolen it, Fred? (Is that why I can't edit the SFO news item, to see if I can attach a photo to it?) Or, did I do something stupid?

You're still the owner of that item. I don't know what a line through it means. I'll take a look once I get to a computer and see if I can figure it out. Where exactly is this line?
