From the Chaplain: The Three Knots

stfrancis

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

I send you all prayers and blessings for newness of life that not only begins each year, but each new day! While our church calendar begins the new year with anticipation for the nativity of Christ in Advent, we who follow the Gregorian calendar in the western world are conditioned to the New Year being in January. So, it is a season where we find new beginnings.

From the Chaplain: "Lord purge our eyes to see"

Lord purge our eyes to see
Within the seed a tree
Within the glowing egg a bird
Within the shroud a butterfly
Till taught by such we see
Beyond all creatures thee

Christina Rossetti

If I had to sum up the single most important spiritual lesson I have been taught, and, I confess, continue to try and remember, it is to pay attention! We say that to our children as a principal in learning, but we forget it as we grow older. Or, we learn to pay attention to distractions and worldly matters, dazzled by the "shiny things."

Principle of the day
3. We shall go forth as witnesses and instruments of the Church's mission among all people, proclaiming Christ by our life and words. Called like Saint Francis to rebuild the Church and inspired by his example, let us devote ourselves energetically to living accountable to our respective denominations and in spiritual fellowship with Christians everywhere.
Minute meditation
  • Leading by Example
You should lead by your example in family, among friends and neighbors, and with colleagues and coworkers or fellow students. Your examples should include putting community above self, placing respect for the dignity of others ahead of self-gratification, and demonstrating love above all.
    From Answer Your Call
Verse of the day
Hebrews 6:10
“God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.”

As a classically trained orator and philosopher he is widely considered the most accomplished rhetorical stylist of his era. He is revered as one of the Three Holy Hierarchs, along with Basil the Great and John Chrysostom. His defense of the doctrine of the Trinity made him one of the greatest champions of orthodoxy against Arianism.
